Environmental Sustainability at Wipro: 'Green IT' and 'IT for Green'

Introduction Contd... Much of this growth was expected to arise out of developing countries such as China and India. Technology obsolescence and mounting electronic waste coupled with power-guzzling data centers were cited as the information and communication technology (ICT) industry's contribution to the negative impact on the environment (Refer to Exhibit I for a glossary of terms pertaining to this industry and its environmental impact). However, it was the efficient use of ICT which enabled enterprises to go green.

For instance, smart grids,⁹ intelligent transport systems, motion and heat detection sensors, smart building management systems, video and web conferencing solutions, and virtualization and consolidation¹⁰ techniques were some of the technology solutions that helped enterprises conserve energy (Refer to Exhibit II for the pioneering sustainability initiatives of IBM, a global leader in the information technology industry).

In India, in the absence of comprehensive legislation to stipulate green practices for ICT companies, some of the leading information technology (IT) companies took initiative to implement ecologically sustainable measures and pursue it as a business opportunity...
